I’m fairly certain, most of us have heard that line before. There was a time when I thought it was a brilliant question. However the truth is, it’s that line of thinking which keeps so many people limited. The real question should be, “Why are you letting your fear of failure stop you?” Behind every successful person is a long laundry list of “failures.” It is in those less than successful endeavors, that a person learns what doesn’t work, what to do differently next time, and greater perseverance by not giving up.
In fact, every successful person I know, wouldn’t limit themselves to pursuits only if they couldn’t fail. Success is not about playing it safe, it’s about reaching for possibility. Imagine how different our world would be without Thomas Edison’s 10,000 prior failed attempts at inventing the light bulb. Or Abraham Lincoln who became President after he lost eight elections, and had two failed business. And where would we be without sticky notes? That was an epic failure in 1968 by Dr. Spencer Silver, a scientist for 3M, who was trying to develop a super-strong adhesive, not one that easily peeled off!
We need to reframe how we think about failure and our absurd need to try to avoid it. In my conversation today on The Game Changer Podcast, I have the incredible pleasure discussing this very topic with Andrea Waltz, co-founder of “Go for no”. If you are someone who has put off doing something because you have a fear of failure, rejection, or putting yourself out there and taking a risk- please listen to this show!
